Dipotamata

In the southeastern part of the island, among the villages of Syneti, Palaiokastro and Kohylou, you can find a heavenly place with lust vegetation, old watermills and stone bridges. It is a river of great natural beauty. It is approximately 7 km long and it used to be part of the journey for those who travelled from Hora to Korthi and vice versa. In fact this was the only means of communication until 1950. The natural environment has remained unspoiled as this route has not been used for more than 35 years now. The vegetation is very dense (oleanders, lentisks, mulberry trees, fig trees, wild oak trees, wild shrubs, reeds, rushes, blackberry and myrtle bushes, wild mint, osiers, ivies). The ravine is a shelter for a number of animals like weasels, badgers, hares, snakes and birds (mainly partridges). The gorge is crossed by a big, cobbled lane. At the intersection with the river, there is an arched bridge as well as small fountains (called gournes) at different parts of the route. There are other, narrower, paths that connect the villages of the area to their fields and their respective watermills. Currently there are 22 preserved watermills in the area, all made of stone by skilled and renowned artisans.
