This museum is housed in the residence of Alexander Roma, President of the Greek parliament and fighter in the battles for the liberation of Ioannina. Alexander is one of the most unique personalities of modern political and military history of Greece.
The building was constructed in the1660s by the vice-consul of England in Zante, Robert John Geoffrey. During the English Protection period (1816-1864) it was used as the residence of the English prefect (Resident) and was known as "Rezintentsa". The building was bought by Alexander Roma in 1880 and it has been the seat of the family since then. Also, up until the Second World War, it was the center of one of the two major political parties of the island (Romianiko Party).
Nowadays, this building is the only mansion sample remaining in Zakynthos after the earthquake of 1953. After 1955 it was partially rebuilt by the previous owner, the famous author Dionysios Romas.
The large reception areas, the libraries with rare old editions and collections of family portraits, paintings, engravings, weapons and other items and artworks, reflect the needs, the mentality and general lifestyle of the old aristocracy of the island.
