This church was built in 1828-1829. There are cells on the north and east side of the building. There are inscriptions on the south side of the entrance with the building date (1829), renovation dates (1847-1850) and the role of Daniel, the Bishop of Chios and Cyclades.
The construction of the church is impressive. The exterior walls are made of stone, and the columns inside are painted in a way that resembles marble. The domes and vaults are made of wood. The wooden frame of the dome looks like an upturned ship. The temple, built by Ant. Nick. Frangoulis, was renovated in 1867. It survived the 1943 bombings and the repair of the damages was completed in 1951 (see the inscription on the north entrance).
Of great interest is the painting of the Assumption, work of El Greco. The painting was discovered in 1983 by archaeologist - Byzantinologist George Mastoropoulos and it is one of the first works of El Greco. The painting was probably transferred to Syros from Psara settlers.
Many associations and unions have given paintings to the church as a gift. For example, the image of the 40 martyrs by Kostarakis or the painting of St. Anthony by priest Michalovits. The oldest paintings are the ones of the Annunciation (1826) and the twelve Apostles (1827) works of an artist from Smyrni. You can also see an embroidered picture of the Assumption (1831) and wall paintings of painters Lambrinos Armenopoulos, Drosinos, and Desipris and many others.
