Delos Museum was built in 1904 and was funded by "the Archaeological Society." The original building consisted of five western rooms. More rooms were built in 1931 and then again in 1972. During the same period the exterior of the building changed a lot because archaeologists wanted to “neutralize” the typically "industrial" elements and make the museum more “distinctive”.
The current exhibition area of the museum includes nine halls. Six of them include sculptures found in Delos, one of the finest collections in the world. Two rooms include prehistoric pottery until late Hellenistic times and the last one houses various small objects found in dwellings of Delos. This exhibition has not been completed yet.
Among others, in the museum you will also find the following collections:
- Funerary statues and columns (7th - 1st century B.C.)
- Pottery (3rd millennium - 1st century B.C.)
- Statuettes (2nd - 1st century B.C.)
- Jewelry and small accessories (2nd - 1st century B.C.)
- Mosaics (2nd - 1st century B.C.)
