High on the hill above the village of Kastellorizo, you will see the monastery of Saint George of the Mountain. You need to climb 315 stairs to reach it but the breathtaking view will compensate your efforts.
The fort-like monastery is surrounded by a square courtyard and includes a church, cells and auxiliary rooms. The church was built on the site of an early Christian basilica. In the western part there is an underground crypt dedicated to Saint Charalambos. According to the inscription in the church, we learn that it was renovated in 1759 by Blessed Anthimos from Cephalonia.
